SRS Distribution Reinforces Their Commitment to Veterans
Military Hiring Initiative
In March 2018, SRS Distribution pledged to hire 500 additional military veterans within the next 5 years. SRS recognizes the value of military veterans’ skills and the similarities between their experiences and our business operations. As Dan Tinker, President and CEO of SRS Distribution said about military veterans, “Their leadership, teamwork, integrity, self-discipline, and high safety standards are just some of the reasons they will thrive in our branches across the U.S.”
To support this effort, we created a Veteran Advisory Council consisting of employees from multiple branches of the military, and a new page on our website that is devoted to this initiative: srsvets.careers.
SRS Distribution and its employees have benefited greatly from the freedom and protection that our military has and will continue to provide. We believe veterans deserve a great post-military career with a company that deeply cares for and respects them. It is with great honor that we welcome veterans to SRS.
Herschel “Woody” Williams
In September, SRS and the Raise the Roof Foundation had the great privilege of honoring Herschel “Woody” Williams with a special reception at our national headquarters, made possible by our friends at 22Kill. Williams, a World War II veteran, is the oldest living Marine Medal of Honor recipient. He shared his wit, wisdom and words of encouragement with our corporate team, which included a number of our veteran employees.
22Kill and Jacob Schick
One of our newer relationships, 22Kill is a key charity partner based in Dallas whose mission is to create a community of partnerships that offer programs and resources for veterans and first responders nationwide, focusing on empowerment, suicide prevention, and mental health. SRS President and CEO Dan Tinker serves on the 22Kill national board of directors.
The CEO of 22Kill is Jacob Schick, a third-generation combat Marine who epitomizes service and sacrifice. After a triple-stacked tank mine detonated below his vehicle in Al Anbar Province, Iraq in 2004, Jake suffered compound fractures in his left leg and left arm; multiple skin, ligament and bone losses; varying burns; partial loss of his left hand and arm; amputation below the knee of his right leg, traumatic brain injury (“TBI”) and post-traumatic stress disorder (“PTSD”).
Despite the countless operations, blood transfusions, and hours of rehabilitation, Jake will tell you that his physical injuries weren’t the worst that happened to him. “Physical pain reminds you you’re alive, mental pain tests your will to stay that way,” is a phrase that Jake often recites.
Jake has become a staunch advocate for maximizing the potential in people from all walks of life and shares his story to motivate them and raise awareness to the epidemic of veteran suicide. Twenty to 22 soldiers die by suicide every day. This sad fact is reflected in the foundations’ name “22Kill”.
We were thrilled to have Jake come speak about his experience and 22Kill at our IRE Concert this year. He delivered a memorable speech at our Foundation Charity Golf Tournament in 2017, and we were very excited to share his message with more of our industry partners. A passionate and fearless leader whose quick wit and stories of intestinal fortitude have a profound impact on everyone he meets, Jake certainly left a strong impression on all of us.
