Obituary: John Ward Moore, Jr.

John Ward “Leo” Moore Jr. – Age 89 of Nashville, passed away on September 10, 2019. He is preceded in death by his wife, Frances Moore (1990) and son, John Ward Moore, III (2010). Leo is survived by his wife, Brenda Kay Wright-Moore; daughter, Elizabeth Keltner (Garey); granddaughter, Meredith Nowers (Michael); great-grandchildren, Libby Nowers and Ward Nowers; step-daughters, LeAnn Henson (Mike), Kamela Stewart (James); step-grandchildren, Austin Harris, Cassidy Harris Whited (Brandon), Shelby Stewart and Dalton Stewart; step great-grandchildren, Hayden, Pazlee and Remi.

Leo attended Duncan Preparatory School for Boys and graduated from Vanderbilt University where he played baseball all four years and proud member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. Following college he served in the military. After boot camp Leo played semi-pro baseball for the Army. Beginning in 1955, Leo started his career with A.J. Smith Company in Lumber and Material Sales. In 1969, he formed Lumberman’s Wholesale Distributors and completed his 64 year career this past April. He served on many local and national associations in the lumber industry. An early member of the Jr. Chamber of Commerce, he was honored as the Man of the Year in 1957 for starting the High School Football Classic, The Clinic Bowl. Leo was also a member of the 100 Club, Vanderbilt Commodore Club, Richland Country Club where he served many times as board member, former trustee at Harding Academy and continued his monthly, Wednesday night Poker club tradition for over 60 years.

His love of reading and as a lifelong student, Leo read many books and studied the Bible daily. Leo was the quiet giver, never wanted recognition and was proud of his Westminster Presbyterian Church, where he was a faithful member and former elder for 6 decades. He also helped develop the Room in the Inn Program and lent a helping hand through the church with disaster relief programs behind the scenes. A man of strong faith and blessing to his family, friends and business associates, he will be missed by all.

A Celebration of Leo’s Life will be held at eleven o’clock in the morning on Monday, September 16, 2019 at Westminster Presbyterian Church. Gathering of family and friends will begin at nine-thirty on Monday at Westminster Presbyterian. Honorary pallbearers: Mike Henson, James Stewart Jr., Austin Harris, Dalton Stewart, Michael Nowers and Phil Duke.
